NITEWD logoAdvanced Training in Trauma Practice Through a Racial Equity Lens: The Case of Jamal

This training will increase practitioner competency in implementing evidence-based trauma informed practice elements using a racial equity lens. Topics of focus will include identification of specific ways that a child’s development may be affected by trauma and appropriate application of practice elements used with children and caregivers. Also included will be the impact of client and therapist positionality on the therapeutic alliance, and increased understanding of how oppression and discrimination affect children and families in relation to trauma interventions.

Case: Jamal is a 10-year-old African American boy living with his maternal grandmother. He is referred by the school after he disclosed sexual abuse (“nasty games”) involving touching his private parts by his babysitter’s boyfriend, which occurred when he was living with his mother. 


Target audience: Mental health practitioners and clinicians who have completed the Core Components and Skills for Trauma Informed Practice Online Course.

Confirmation Notices and Certificates of Completion:
We will confirm your registration by email after registration is received. The email will contain instructions on how to join the webinar along with the link. Successful completion includes full attendance for both training sessions. Within 7 days of the conclusion of the webinar, you will receive an email notifying you that the evaluations and certificates are ready. The email will include a link to https://bhs.unc.edu where you can log in using the username and password you chose at registration. Once you have logged in, you will see the training titles listed under "My Courses" on the left side. After clicking on the link, you will be taken to another page where you can click the link to the event evaluation. Once you have completed and submitted your evaluation, you can click on the link to access the Certificate of Completion. Your Certificate will be emailed to you as a PDF document.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify how a triggering experience can impact a school-age child who has experienced trauma 
  • Identify two cultural factors and processes which can influence children’s and families’ experiences of trauma  
  • Understand and apply the practice elements of relaxation, affect regulation, non-verbal interventions, and homework with at least one client

Dr. Quiros earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Social Welfare from The Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, where her dissertation focused on “The Social Construction of Racial and Ethnic Identity among Women of Color from Mixed Ancestry: Psychological Freedoms and Sociological.” She also earned a master’s degree in social work from Hunter College School of Social Work and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Skidmore College. Dr. Quiros' latest book focuses on incorporating diversity and inclusion into trauma-informed social work. Dr. Quiros joins Montclair State University, Department of Social Work and Child Advocacy as an Associate Professor on September 1, 2022. This move situated Dr. Quiros in her community of Montclair NJ, where she continues to lead and be involved in anti-oppression work within the school system and the wider community. Her research and scholarly interests focus trauma informed care through a social justice lens and the social construction of racial and ethnic identity and. Dr. Quiros was awarded the Adelphi University 2021 Award for Excellence in Teaching Social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (SJEDI). The annual Excellence in Teaching SJEDI Award honors an Adelphi professor who demonstrates a commitment to SJEDI inside the classroom above and beyond the standard curriculum for the faculty member's discipline. 

As a woman of color from a multicultural background, Dr. Quiros leverages her experiences, relationship building, and clinical skills to foster connections, inclusion, and empathic accountability. Having to negotiate her own identity required her to create safe spaces to survive and thrive and helped her develop tools that allow her to relate to various experiences that impact diverse groups.
