Advanced Training in Trauma Practice Through a Racial Equity Lens: The Case of Emma Grace
This training will increase practitioner competency in implementing evidence-based trauma informed practice elements. Topics of focus will include identification of specific ways that a child’s development may be affected by trauma and appropriate application of practice elements used with children and caregivers. Also included will be the impact of client and therapist positionality on the therapeutic alliance.
Case: Mr. Seamus Connor Brennan, Sr. (White, age 38) died from COVID-19 six weeks ago in front of his family and several colleagues. During his death, the family witnessed his distress including hearing his sternum break at the time CPR was performed. The Brennan family – Mrs. Brennan, Connor (10 and Emma Grace (5) - is having difficulty with grief, loss, and post-traumatic stress symptoms.
Target audience: Mental health practitioners and clinicians who have completed the Core Components and Skills for Trauma Informed Practice Online Course.

Successful completion includes full attendance for both training sessions. Within 7 days of the conclusion of the webinar, you will receive an email notifying you that the evaluations and certificates are ready. The email will include a link to https://bhs.unc.edu where you can log in using the username and password you chose at registration. Once you have logged in, you will see the training titles listed under "My Courses" on the left side. After clicking on the link, you will be taken to another page where you can click the link to the event evaluation. Once you have completed and submitted your evaluation, you can click on the link to access the Certificate of Completion. Your Certificate will be emailed to you as a PDF document.

Learning Objectives:
- Identify three specific ways in which a young child’s biological, emotional, social, and cognitive development may be affected by a traumatic experience.
- Appreciate two impacts of client and therapist positionality on the therapeutic alliance.
- Identify and appropriately apply trauma assessment, psychoeducation, safety planning, and family interventions with young children and caregivers.
- Incorporate an understanding of how hardship and adverse experiences affect children and families in relationship to trauma.
