The Provider Training Program aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of licensed clinicians through a structured and comprehensive series of training modules. This initiative focuses on delivering high-quality content and training across various formats, including webinars, clinical supervision series, and asynchronous courses.

Target audience:

Mental health professionals, including psychologists, clinical social workers, licensed professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, substance abuse counselors, pastoral counselors, school counselors, as well as those who would like to learn more about topics specific to the field of behavioral healthcare.

Continuing Education:
The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6642.  Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified.  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs.  Completing both webinars qualifies for 3.5 contact hours.

This course is pending approval from the North Carolina Addiction Specialist Professional Practice Board for 3.5 contact hours.

Confirmation Notices and Certificates of Completion:
We will confirm your registration by email after registration is received. The email will contain instructions on how to join the webinar along with the link. Successful completion includes full attendance for the entire day. Within 7 days of the conclusion of the webinar, you will receive an email notifying you that the evaluations and certificates are ready. The email will include a link to https://bhs.unc.edu where you can log in using the username and password you chose at registration. Once you have logged in, you will see the training titles listed under "My Courses" on the left side. After clicking on the link, you will be taken to another page where you can click the link to the event evaluation. Once you have completed and submitted your evaluation, you can click on the link to access the Certificate of Completion. Your Certificate will be emailed to you as a PDF document.

Title: Persistent Stress Exposure and Identity-Based Trauma 

Presenter: Dr. Tamara Atkinson, DHA, MSW, LCSW 

This didactic will assist clinical helpers to understand, recognize, and position themselves in identifying identity-based trauma when working with clients, regardless of the helper’s personal identity. Participants will engage is self- exploration and will be challenged to take a critical assessment of their ability to treat diverse clients in an effective and cultural informed manner. Through experiential learning, participants will begin to develop competencies to engage in critical conversations with clients who have experienced identity related traumatic injuries and to do so in a manner that enhances the therapeutic relationship and does not lead to further traumatic injury. 

Learning Objectives: 

Day 1:  

Participants will understand the intersectionality of identity, trauma, and mental and physical health. 

Participants will describe the organizing principles associated with identity-based trauma. 

Using an ecological systems perspective, participants will recognize the systemic factors contributing to identity-based trauma. 

Participants will be able to identify the symptoms of identity- based traumatic stress responses and differentiate them from PTSD. 

Participants will examine the need for culturally appropriate and sensitive treatment approaches to better serve a diverse client population. 

 

Day 2:  

Participants will demonstrate their understanding of tools available to assess for  identity-based trauma. 

Participants will formulate culturally relevant plans and interventions to treat clients experiencing identity-based trauma.

Dr. Tamara AtkinsonDr. Tamara Atkinson is the CEO and Principal at Global Health Resource Group, LLC (GHRG). Her work centers on equipping provider organizations and their teams with comprehensive and systems-level approaches to deliver equitable, high-quality care to the communities they serve. Dr. Atkinson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 15 years of experience in the implementation of evidence-based practice models within community-based programs and healthcare systems. She specializes in organizational transformation using implementation science, systems science, continuous quality improvement, and human centered design frameworks.

Dr. Atkinson is also a health sciences researcher. Her research focuses on the influence of stressors and environmental factors on chronic diseases, particularly in hard to reach and historically underserved communities. She is currently designing and leading community engagement pilot programs in rural areas of North Carolina and Georgia, aimed at improving representation in study participation.

Dr. Atkinson is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT).
