Peer Support - Reducing Stigma

This course explores how stigma of individuals in recovery with serious mental illness and substance use disorders develops. By taking a closer look at how stigma is defined and its negative effects, you will have an opportunity to learn how to combat stigma in your community.  

Objectives:

  • Define stigma: By being able to define stigma, Peer Support Specialists will identify patterns, language use, and interactions that affect the continued recovery of peers and the growth of the peer support profession.
  • Understand the efforts or impact of stigma: Peer Support Specialists will not only identify specific behaviors associated with stigma but will also understand how stigma negatively impacts peers and strains connection with those in recovery.
  • Identify tools to combat stigma: Peer Support Specialists will be able to learn effective tools and techniques that will enable them to reduce stigma.
