Plenary 1 Session Overview

Speakers: Sharon Bell, Stacie Forrest, Amy Peterson, Laura Muse, Krystal Graves

RRT/ERT – Participants will be updated on current trends and policies related to the Rapid Response Team and Executive Response Team in North Carolina. Participants will be informed of upcoming plans for RRT/ERT moving forward.

One System of Care – Participants will be updated on current trends and policies related to System of Care in North Carolina. Participants will be informed of upcoming plans for System of Care moving forward.

Early Childhood Mental Health – Participants will be updated on current trends and policies related to Early Childhood Mental Health in North Carolina. Participants will be informed of upcoming plans for Early Childhood Mental Health moving forward.

School Behavioral Health – Participants will be updated on current trends and policies related to School Behavioral Health in North Carolina. Participants will be informed of upcoming plans for School Behavioral Health moving forward. 

CWCN – Participants will be updated on current trends and policies related to Children with Complex Needs in North Carolina. Participants will be informed of upcoming plans for Children with Complex Needs moving forward.

  1. Examine current and upcoming RRT/ERT policies and practices.
  2. Examine current and upcoming System of Care policies and practices.
  3. Examine current and upcoming Early Childhood Mental Health policies and practices.
  4. Examine current and upcoming School Behavioral Health policies and practices.

Title: Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health: Implications on the Workforce
Speaker: Kelsey Smith / Asata Virgo

Description:
Participants will be informed about the importance of early childhood mental health and workforce development strategies that have been implemented nationally and in the state of NC. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe infant early childhood mental health and its importance.

2. Identify national and state workforce development strategies to expand early childhood mental health services, including NCIMHA initiatives such as the Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health (IECMH) Endorsement.

Title: YMHFA/tMHFA and Its Impact on School Behavioral Health
Speaker: Ruby Brown-Herring 

Description:
Participants will learn the components of YMHFA/tMHFA and its impact on student wellness outcomes.  

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the YMHFA & tMHFA model.
2. Illustrate how each model improves school behavioral health outcomes and wellness.

Title: The Culture of IDD and Important Considerations to Improve Child and Family Health
Speaker: Michelle Franklin & Kim Schlegel (NCPAL)

Description:

Presenters will discuss the ongoing stigma, discrimination and barriers that children with IDD and their families experience. Through examining the latest research finding and leveraging interactive activities participants will identify action steps that can be utilized to improve the overall health of children with IDD and their families.  

 People with IDD experience the greatest amount of stigma compared to other disabilities.  Concerted efforts are required to dismantle the stigma and discrimination and ensure an inclusive, accessible community.  Recognizing and understanding different communities an individual with IDD belongs to is crucial in providing person and family centered support.   

Learning Objectives: 

1. Identify and explore stigma and challenges faced by the IDD community during childhood and their impact on family health.  

2. Identify strategies to support overall health for children with IDD and their families  

Title: NC Rapid Response Team (RRT)-Who, What, When, Where and How to get RRT (Rapid Response Team) involved?
Speaker: Brianna Bibbs

Description:

Participants will understand what Rapid Response Team is and understand policy and procedures of RRT.    

Learning Objectives:

1. Enhance participants' knowledge of the policy and procedures of RRT.
2. Explain Rapid Response Team members roles and responsibilities.

Title: Promotion of Early Childhood Mental Health Practices in NC
Speaker: Christina Peterson/Mebane Boyd 

Description 

Participants will be introduced to NCPC/Smart Start’s organizational approach to expanding early childhood mental health strategies.   

Learning Objectives 

1. Explain the importance of expanding Early Childhood Mental Health policy in the state of NC.
2. Examine NCPC/Smart Start’s approach to expand Early Childhood Mental Health services.

Title: Welcoming Children and Caregivers Off of Blame Street: How Circle of Security Parenting Works in Session, in Communities, in Classroom and Across NC
Speaker: Susanne Walker Wilson 

Description:

Participants will be informed about the Circle of Security parenting model benefits both children and their families.   

Learning Objectives 

1. Describe children’s need for secure base relationships to optimize learning and exploration and their need for safe haven relationships that allow for coregulation and the capacity to manage and organize feelings using a COSP graphic.
2. Identify the role blame (of the child, the parent, or both) plays in many prescriptive parenting models and describe an alternative approach that welcomes caregivers off of blame street optimizing engagement, reflection, vulnerability and change.

Title: Project AWARE/ACTIVATE and Its Impact on Student Wellness
Speakers: Laura Muse/Andrea Rouse/Jean Kerr

Description:

Participants will learn the components of Project AWARE/ACTIVATE and its impact on student wellness outcomes. 

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe the purpose of Project AWARE/ACTIVATE and components.
2. Recognize the impact Project AWARE/ACTIVATE has on student wellness by analyzing outcomes data.

Title: Application of Positive Behavioral Support Strategies Using a Trauma Informed Lens Approach
Speaker: Dr. Uzama Price Ed D, NADD-DDS, RBT 

Description

Participants will be introduced to positive behavior strategies critical to supporting children who have complex needs.  The biopsychosocial approach will be addressed throughout the presentation as well as sharing specific strategies that have been applied across all levels of care.  

Learning Objectives

1. Define positive behavior strategies.
2. Apply a trauma informed lens while implementing positive behavioral supports strategies to support children with complex needs
