An Introduction to Children with Complex Needs: Driving Clinical Innovations to Prepare and Empower the Emerging Workforce

Every child with complex needs deserves not just treatment, but a pathway to a fulfilling life in the least restrictive setting possible. Those diagnosed with intellectual and developmental disabilities require tailored interventions and proactive support for their caregivers to ensure that every individual receives the holistic care they need. This course will delve into the historical context surrounding children with complex needs, the key elements of the settlement agreement between Disability Rights and the State of North Carolina, and the range of initiatives developed to effectively address this vulnerable population's behavioral and physical needs.
This course targets learners who are currently or will soon enter the workforce. This training will address learners interested in supporting dually diagnosed youth and expanding their knowledge of addressing comorbidities in the behavioral health realm.
Learning Outcomes
Learners who complete this course, will be able to:
- Clarify essential terms associated with Children with Complex Needs (CWCN).
 - Recognize the significant implications for supporting youth with intellectual and mental health diagnoses.
 - Discover trauma-informed, practical strategies that offer meaningful support.

Modality
This course consists of a pre-learning quiz, a video presentation, and a post-learning quiz. Learners must complete the pre-learning quiz, video presentation, the post-learning quiz, and a course evaluation to receive a certificate of completion.  This course takes approximately 2 hours to complete.
Presenter

Uzama Price Ed.D., NADD-DDS, CC, LBA, LCAS-A
Dr. Uzama Price is an esteemed licensed behavior analyst and accomplished scholar-practitioner with over 19 years of dedicated experience in the behavioral health field. Her impactful work centers on empowering children and adults diagnosed with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental illnesses in North Carolina. Originally from Jamaica, Dr. Price has enriched her expertise over three decades of living in the United States. With a robust educational foundation that includes a doctorate in Education, advanced post-doctoral studies in Applied Behavior Analysis, and a recent master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Liberty University, Dr. Price stands at the forefront of her field. She has contributed to research as an associate on the Developing Gratitude Study at the University of NC-Greensboro and has expertly designed training programs to foster workforce development in Canada, Jamaica, NC, and throughout the United States.
Her training initiatives encompass vital areas such as sexual health promotion, supported decision-making, cultural awareness, criminal justice, autism, intellectual disability, and mental health. Dr. Price’s exemplary contributions have been recognized through prestigious honors, including the NADD Member of the Year Award in 2021 and the Partner Award from NC START in 2022. In February 2023, she further showcased her commitment to the field by participating in the Capacity Building Institute for NASDDS (National Association of State Directors Developmental Disabilities Services). Today, she proudly serves as the President of the Jamaican Association of Greensboro and actively engages with professional organizations such as NC ABA, the NC Counseling Association, and the NADD. Dr. Price’s blend of experience, leadership, and passion for advocacy positions her as a transformative force in the behavioral health landscape.

Continuing Education
UNC SSW, 1406, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Organizations, not individual courses, are approved as ACE providers. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. UNC SSW maintains responsibility for this course. ACE provider approval period: 8/10/25-8/10/28. Social workers completing this course receive 2 general continuing education credits. 
UNC SSW has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider, ACEP No. 6642. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly identified. UNC SSW is solely responsible for all aspects of the programs. The successful completion of this online course qualifies for 2 contact hours.
