Partnering with Guardians

Webinar Image

Guardianship remains a tool for support in our disability and older adult systems, although it represents a legally restrictive option for people who need increased support for decision-making.

This session addresses the historical context for guardianship and identifies options and alternatives that also provide support for decision making and autonomy for people who have guardians. Our webinar highlights tools of practice that can be useful when the person needing support, others who care, and guardians’ wishes are not aligned, and we review a matrix that is useful when assessing and supporting risk.

In this session we will:

  • Discuss the context for guardianship as a tool in the human services system.
  • Describe at least two alternatives to guardianship.

Identify tools useful in addressing goal alignment and evaluating and assessing risk.
